While a parents mind can make the connection in a nanosecond as to why succumbing to a skimpy fashion trend is not something a mother wants her daughter participating in, a young girl can only process that it makes them feel older and in their minds, possibly, hopefully, cool. I am no economist, but if supply and demand determines goods for a market, then I don’t understand why we can’t demand that fashion designers get with the program and find out what parents truly need when it comes to dressing their children. For those of us whose children attend public schools, I wish that as parents – beautiful cocktail dresses 2011 ; the ones in control – we would all ban together and dress dress our children in polo shirts and khaki pants, because if we were united in this our children would not feel like the odd person out. I understand the need for freedom of expression and those who attend private schools where uniforms are mandatory have figured out how to express themselves through accessories.   Perhaps I have been in Flashdance denial or perhaps it is because the trend sort of crept back into fashion one piece at a time. First it was the black leggings which on their own are quite harmless. I saw leg warmers in the stores but never really saw them on a human, but it was the increasing off the shoulder shirts that I continue to see that made it obvious to me that fashion had receded back to a trend that some us deemed unnecessary the first time around.
